Summer Makes Weight Loss Easier

Summer sun and funYou might think you’ve missed the boat if you didn’t shed those extra lbs. you were trying to lose before swimsuit season. Don’t go away because there’s another boat at the dock to take you to that weight loss destination. No travel or money involved!

For most of us, Summer means baring more skin, enjoying more outdoor activities and perhaps taking some vacation time. These are the very things that make summertime the best time to lose weight. Vitamin D is essential for your body’s metabolic processes, and sunshine is your best source.

Have Fun and Relax Three Times Per Week

Sunshine, relaxation and exercise are your weight loss powerhouse. Without spending money on a gym, an expensive vacation or nutritional supplements, you can gain the benefits of the season and use them to your advantage. Combining these three with a nutrient rich low-glycemic diet could be the key to getting the weight loss results you desire.

Most experts agree that everyone needs to engage in some form of exercise 3 or 4 times a week. It’s a lot easier to do that when the weather is nice and daylight hours are extended. For you that might mean taking a walk, a bike ride or a dip in the pool after work. For others it might mean hiking and camping on the weekends, or getting together with friends for casual sports. A combination of getting some extra activity on work days and making good use of days off can increase your calorie burn, muscle strength and cardiovascular health.

Exercise goes hand in hand with relaxation because it reduces stress by increasing endorphins, the feel good hormone. But you should also make an effort to reduce chronic stress by relaxing in the sunshine and enjoying nature, family and friends often. Prolonged stress can lead to increased abdominal fat because of too much cortisol circulating in the bloodstream. Chronic stress can lead to serious health complications such as:

  • Impaired brain function
  • Reduced thyroid function
  • Blood sugar imbalances
  • Decreased bone density
  • Sleep disruption
  • Reduced muscle mas
  • High blood pressure
  • Lowered immune function
  • Slow wound healing
  • Increased abdominal fat

When the adrenal glands have to constantly produce cortisol in response to chronic stress it can lead to adrenal fatigue. This can also lead to weight gain due to a suppressed metabolism, as well as blood sugar and thyroid imbalances. Symptoms of adrenal fatigue may include:

  • Brain fog
  • Depression
  • Low thyroid function
  • Blood sugar imbalances
  • Chronic tiredness
  • Sleep disruption
  • Low blood pressure
  • Lowered immune function
  • Inflammation

So rather than waiting all year to take a much needed vacation, it would be wiser to build fun, relaxation and exercise into your weekly routine. What better time to start than Summer when sunlight and opportunities abound.

Your Skin Makes Vitamin D

Very little food contains vitamin D so It’s not really possible to get enough from diet alone, even if you drink fortified milk and orange juice. Some food sources where vitamin D occurs naturally are the skin of fatty fish, fish liver oils, and small amounts are found in beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks. Even if you ate some of these foods every day you would not get enough vitamin D without the addition of supplements or sunshine.

Summer family funYour body produces vitamin D through the synthesis of sunlight on the skin. It plays an important role in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, which are significant to bone and heart health. Sensible sun exposure for 15 to 30 minutes 3 times a week allows your body to produce enough of this prohormone,  but you can become depleted again in as little as 2 weeks.

Vitamin D through sun exposure, sun lamps and supplements are used in the treatment of many chronic diseases including diabetes. It is known to even have an impact on the gene expression involved in cancer development.  If you want your body to stay well and function optimally there is no getting around the significance of the sun.
